A set of chrome/edge browser extensions that have been popular for years, turned into malware after an update last year (2024). The extensions, among which Clean Master is the most popular, were publised by Star Laboratary Technology Co. , a Chinese company.
The extensions run malicious JavaScript with full browser access and collecting data on all operations and send them to China.
After settling a lawsuit, Google will destroy tracking information it collected on websites containing google tracking (analytics) or advertising info for users browsing in incognito mode.

Separte from the lawsuit, Google is also phasing out usage of third party cookies in Chrome. Currently you can configure chrome to block third pary cookies, it just is not the default as it is in Firefox and Safari.
Google will retire their personalised home page iGoogle on 11/2013.
This was a pretty neat service combining RSS feeds, overview of discussion groups and financial portfolio's. You had nice gadgets like currency convertors and art of the day, all embedded in changing themes (comics, travel photo's...).
The logic behind this is not clear to me. There will be some cost shavings, but i can not imagine that iGoogle is that expensive.
Google encourages you to use Android and Chrome as a replacement. Android has nothing to do with desktops so they may be wanting to push Chrome. Strange: retiring a service is not encouraging for using another service of that same company.
There will be some collateral damage too: iGoogle gadgets pushed you towards Google discussion groups, Google Finance etc.
So it's back to My Yahoo for me, which is close, but not as slik.
Maybe I should start preparing for WordPress as well...

Chrome is just a trojan to push the Google Gears browser plugin to the desktop.
Gears is a platform to build featurefull, fast applications, running in separate threads (exactly the Chrome features). The applications have access to a local database and can also run offline.
Google recently launched its own web browser: Chrome.
At first sight this is a frontal attack on Firefox and resembles Micorsoft's monopolistic behaviour.
The browser has a minimalistic non-spectacular look. Most important features seems to be speedy javascript and multithreading.
I hope this browser acts as a lab for things that can mature into Firefox, much like the hotjava browser did.
To be watched with caution.
